Hey everyone, I just bought an Innova 3100 OBD2 Code Reader. Any c3er that needs to read a code or reset a light is free to use it. I'll be keeping it here at my shop, but I can also bring it on a club run.

I bought it to read an SES (Service Engine Soon) light on my MCS.

Richard

Wow, that will really come in handy. I always thought that you HAD to go to the dealer to find that out, does it turn the lights off too? Hmmm, can you explane how that works? What happens if you reset a warning light and something bad happens afterwards?

When you get the SES (Service Engine Soon) light, it can mean a variety of things including your gas cap wasn't on tight, to my case--a misfire on cylinder 1 in the engine. The SES warning light isn't always a critical problem, and it costs money to have the dealer reset the light--I'm told about $80.

Resetting the SES light isn't something you always want to do, especially if you're taking it to a mechanic for fixing but knowing the severity of the problem before making a dealer visit allows you to decide whether it really is necessary to make tha service appointment or not. I remember last year on our way up to Cambria with WCM, one of the cars had their SES light come up, and I think it was Ed that had a reader-- connected it and determined that the engine was running rich. It wasn't a critical problem, and meant that the MINI owner didn't have to stop the trip and get it serviced. So the reader was helpful in that regard for providing peace of mind.

In my case, I'm not resetting the light, but just understanding the data error P0310 before I take it to Scott over at Central Coast Coopers.

For my problem, there are a number of potential reasons including a spark plug issue to somethings more serious.

The scanner can also be used to reset the Oil Service light although there is also a procedure to do that without this tool.

Finally, this tool won't diagnose ABS or Airbag sensor issues--that would have cost a lot more $$ and it wasn't something I needed right now.

Hope that helps!

Richard

Yes that helps! I think I will continue to let the dealer take care of any warning lights
